In a "Day After Tomorrow"-esque scenario, it is believed that the entire United States has snow on the ground-even Hawaii (Well...the volcano peaks there sometimes have snow so I guess that's what they are counting).
Major news stations are even offering articles on how to keep your heart safe when shoveling in their lifesyle sections. It's funny how people don't know how to shovel snow.
Then there is the misconception that this whole ordeal "debunks" global warming.
Let me briefly get a few facts straight:
It's true...Global Warming isn't a really accurate term to be using. Global Climate Change is actually the more correct term to be using.
The term "Global Warming" is a reference to the fact that the rise of CO2 ppm in the atmosphere positively correlates with the temperature rising. CO2 levels and temperature have fluctuated on a cycle that has brought the earth into "Ice Ages" and back out of it. The natural peak of CO2 is 280ppm. We are currently sitting at 386ppm. The direct correlation to rising temperatures is what concerns people.
The earth has never seen a time where the CO2 levels were at 386ppm. We are basically "experimenting" on the earth. It is unknown what exact changes in climate are to occur because we have disrupted the natural cycle...but it is known that the climate is changing...and the cause is anthropogenic.
Snow has happened in these places before. Weather is different than climate.
El nino is going on. It makes weird weather.
There are so many natural cycles within the earth...it's hard to tell what exactly is going to happen because there are so many factors. it is unclear how all these factors interact with one another. The earth is complex.
I tried to make that as easy as possible.
The point is, the climate is changing and we need to do something about it. The snow in the south doesn't prove or disprove anything. It is a singular event.
As Bill Nye says on the matter: "Stay passionate my friends, let’s work together and change the world".
